How to Pick the Right Thong: Style & Fit Explained

Thongs come in a wide variety of cuts. While the back always has minimal coverage, the sides and the front can vary quite a bit.

In order from least coverage to most, here are the common styles of thongs—so you can decide which is best for you.

Micro Thong

With minimal coverage in the back and the front, the micro thong is your smallest cut. Available in ultra fine mesh, cotton jersey, and Fits Everybody fabric, this cut is least likely to show beneath your outfit thanks to its tiny profile.

T-string Thong

The T-string gets its name from the t-connection between the strings that meet in the back. While the front may have a bit more coverage than the micro thong, the back is string-only and no-nonsense.

Dipped Thong

Dipped thongs have a subtle dip in the front and offer a bit more coverage around the sides. Designed to be worn high on the hips, dipped thongs come in a wide variety of colors & fabrics.

High Cut Thong

A variation on the dipped thong, this style sits even higher on the hips for a flattering look.

Cotton Thong

Made with soft cotton, these thongs are high-waisted and topped off with a sporty waistband. Available in many colors in Cotton rib or Logo rib.

High Waisted Thong

Coverage where you want it, cheekiness where you don’t. Reaching up to cover the tummy, the high-waisted thong offers more coverage but without any visible panty lines, thanks to the thong cut.

Smoothing Thong

With ultra light support, this thong has a classic silhouette with a bit of smoothing compression across the tummy.

Shapewear Thong

Yes, shapewear comes in a thong. You can get targeted compression in any of our tummy control thong selections, without the panty lines around back. Check out our Mid-waist Thong or High-waisted thong shapewear, ranging from barely there support to high-compression solutions.

No Visible Lines

Half the point of a thong is to avoid panty lines, and luckily there’s a SKIMS thong that helps drive that home. The Naked Dipped Thong is totally seamless with raw edge cuts, making it the ultimate thong solution for zero panty lines.

How to find the right fit

Thongs should fit snugly, but shouldn’t dig into your skin either. If you’re seeing thongs lines after wearing one all day, you may be more comfortable if you go up a size. Some people find that they prefer to buy a size bigger in thongs than other underwear.

If your thong is bunching in the front or sits high enough that it shows above your pants or skirts, you may want to size down or choose a different style.
You shouldn’t even notice your thong is there if it’s the right style and size for you. See our underwear size guide to get started.
